Friday Night Live: Empowering Youth Leaders for Healthy, Connected Communities

Friday Night Live (FNL) is a youth leadership development program serving elementary (4th–12th grade), middle, and high school students across San Diego County. Activities are organized by youth, for youth, from dances and movie nights to community service projects and advocacy efforts for safe, healthy environments, such as sober grad initiatives. At its core, FNL fosters resiliency and protective factors by developing action-oriented chapters that:

  • Provide meaningful support and opportunities for young people
  • Build strong, confident, and successful youth leaders
  • Cultivate positive relationships and peer-oriented programming that is youth-driven and youth-led
  • Encourage goal-directed, innovative action and active community engagement
  • Embrace broad appeal across diverse ethnic, racial, and social groups
  • Empower young people to care for one another and their communities

Friday Night Live supports student wellbeing through a holistic, relationship-centered approach that addresses the social, emotional, and physical dimensions of adolescent health. FNL integrates these areas into the everyday experience of chapter participation rather than treating them as separate concerns.

Social-Emotional Wellbeing is at the heart of the FNL model. Youth develop a sense of belonging, identity, and purpose by planning and leading activities alongside their peers. The program intentionally builds protective factors, including positive peer relationships, connection to school and community, and a sense of personal agecy, that are consistently linked to resilience and reduced risk behavior. Youth are not passive recipients of programming but active decision-makers, which builds confidence and reinforces a positive self-concept.

Mental Health is supported through FNL's emphasis on protective factors and resiliency. By giving young people structured opportunities to connect, contribute, and be recognized as leaders, FNL addresses underlying conditions such as isolation, lack of purpose, and disconnection from school that can contribute to poor mental health outcomes among adolescents. FNL Mentoring further supports this by providing younger students with consistent, caring relationships with older peers, which is a recognized protective factor for adolescent mental health.

Physical Health and Prevention are addressed through FNL's focus on substance use prevention and advocacy for safe, healthy environments. Youth engage in education and action around underage drinking, underage cannabis use, and problem gambling, developing the knowledge, skills, and social norms that support healthy decision-making. Activities like sober grad advocacy position youth as community health champions, reinforcing their own protective behaviors while benefiting their broader school community.
