SC-RTAC Community School’s Webinar Highlights: How La Mesa-Spring Valley’s Expanded Learning Program Empowers Students Through a Creative Podcast

One of the most impactful elements to emerge from the community school strategy and expanded learning framework is the focus on deeply listening to and activating student voice and agency. When educators genuinely listen to students, they create opportunities that are not only relevant to students but also build meaningful connections within their school communities.

On Feb. 6, 2025, La Mesa-Spring Valley presented at the SC-RTAC Community School’s webinar, which focused on student engagement, student voice, and leadership. In addition, student leaders and seniors from San Diego High School introduced the Relationship Window and Student Voice Continuum to community school professionals. This session prompted deep discussions about improving opportunities for student voice and agency at school sites.

As part of the event, La Mesa-Spring Valley was featured as a highlight from the expanded learning field. La Mesa-Spring Valley shared how their expanded learning program empowers students. The district’s Expanded Learning Program, "ESS-Extended Student Services," has embraced student voice and engagement in an innovative way, giving students a platform to express themselves and engage with their community.

Students recording the "Hang Time" podcast

At Spring Valley Academy, the Expanded Learning Program staff developed a unique opportunity for students to take on leadership roles while amplifying their voices on community issues. Their solution? A student-led podcast that addresses current events and trending topics. The "Hang Time" podcast not only allows students to discuss matters important to them but also fosters a deeper understanding of the staff who work directly with them, promoting trust and building relationships.

La Mesa-Spring Valley showcased this initiative during the SC-RTAC webinar, sharing the impact and benefits of integrating the podcast club into their expanded learning programs. The podcast offers students a dynamic and creative outlet, enabling them to explore and address local concerns, share their perspectives, and develop communication skills—all while strengthening the bond between students and staff.

By empowering students to speak up and be heard, La Mesa-Spring Valley is not only enhancing their educational experience but also supporting the development of engaged, thoughtful young leaders. This approach exemplifies how the community school strategy and quality standards for expanded learning, with a focus on student voice, can create a vibrant, inclusive environment where students are seen, heard, and valued. The Hang Time podcast at Spring Valley Academy is a shining example of how listening to students can transform both the school experience and community.
